Neurofeedback Therapy

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback, also called electroencephalogram biofeedback (EEG for short), uses your brain’s own smarts to help you dial down anxious feelings.

EEG measures brain feedback in real time, and displays the information visually on a computer monitor. This instant feedback information allows for quick and efficient adjustments to brain function which allow training and strengthening that ultimately reduces feelings of anxiety.

As a form of highly personalized brain training, there is little else in the medical field today to rival the potential effectiveness and customization of neurofeedback for anxiety.

Harvard University goes so far as to post it may represent the future of psychiatric care for a wide range of mental health issues ranging from ADHD to anxiety.

How Does It Work?

What if an anxiety treatment existed that was legal, free from side effects, long-lasting, and took effect instantly. If it reduced anxious thoughts, made you feel calmer, happier, and more content, wouldn’t you try it?

EEG treatment can accomplish all this, and you don’t even have to pop a pill. Here is a basic overview of how the treatment works and what to expect during your first session.

Here at TMS Health and Wellness, we offer the cutting edge of neurofeedback treatment using the latest imaging hardware, offering prosise results with accuracy not possible even a decade ago.

First, you come into our office and will get settled into a comfy chair. Your provider will place small, non-invasive sensors in appropriate positions along the surface of your scalp in order to address the symptoms you want to treat.

These sensors help your brain and the EEG computer to communicate, almost like you and the computer are talking on a telephone call together. As your brain sends out a signal, the computer responds with a signal in turn.

You can imagine this next part as if your brain has called the EEG computer to ask for directions. Step by step, signal by exchanged signal, the EEG computer guides your brain out of its anxious, stuck patterns and back towards the road to calm, contentment and clarity.

The sessions do not take long, most last only 20 minutes from the time you arrive, to the time you depart. Most importantly, the vast majority of patients report feeling better that same day.

How Safe Is It?

Neurofeedback is completely safe and non-invasive. The easiest way to think about it is as a kind of strength training for the brain. EEG allows the brain to strengthen to the point it can resume its’ natural self-regulating function. The only temporary side effect patients regularly report is some fatigue, which is normal after a good workout!

How Can It Ease Anxiety?

Neurofeedback treatment for anxiety is not considered to be a “cure” for anxiety, but rather a long term management strategy.

The reason being, anxiety arises due to a wide variety of influencing factors, such as genetics and environment, and even personality and life experiences. Brain activity is influenced by each of these factors, so while your brain can learn new tricks, so to speak, it can’t change its own inherited DNA.

Thanks to the personalized nature of the treatment, no matter the combination of factors from individual to individual, neurofeedback treatment has is effective as an effective long term management strategy to mitigate feelings of anxiety.

The repetition involved with EEG treatment is a large part of the high success rate it has delivered to date. General treatment protocols recommend 20 sessions over the course of up to 20 weeks.

Who Is A Good Candidate?

The best candidate for EEG treatment is someone who is highly motivated to ease feelings of anxiety. Often patients come seeking treatment because they do not want to take medications or because past drug treatment has not produced the desired results.

For the highest success rate and the longest lasting results, it is important to attend each session as scheduled, adopt a healthy lifestyle, and to maintain reasonable expectations (improvement over time as a journey rather than an instant “cure”).

Before making the decision to pursue EEG treatment, it is important to consult with your doctor if you have a pacemaker or are currently being treated for any serious health condition.

What Is Treatment Like?

EEG treatment is painless, non-invasive and drug-free, and requires no preparation or down time. It can easily fit into any schedule, because you can return to your regular daily activities immediately after each session.

General treatment protocol recommends 20, 20 minutes sessions. This equates to a little over 6 hours spread over 20 weeks. Six hours is such a small time commitment to make in exchange for a long term strategy to living a happier, calmer, and less anxious life.

If you struggle with anxiety, and want a safe, effective, and personalized treatment that will give you the strength to overcome anxiety, EEG treatment may be the solution.
